Level : Form 1 (Intermediate to advanced)
Time : 70 minutes (double-period class)
Theme/Topic : Food and Nutrition

General Objective: Integrating ICT in English lesson

Specific Objectives (Educational aims):
1. Students should be able to obtain information from food menus and their nutrition facts.
2. Students should be able to browse for nutrition facts and categorise them according to the food pyramid.
3. Students should be able to write a short paragraph comparing and contrasting the food menus.

Skills integrated:
1. Reading to obtain information.
2. Writing to compare and contrast.

Previous knowledge:
1. Students are already familiar with the food pyramid.
2. Students are familiar with how food choices affect their bodies.
3. Students have already learned the keywords to comparing and contrasting.
(e.g. Like, similar, as, to, although, however, etc)

Technical Requirements:
1. One computer for 3-4 students with a decent Internet connection and web browser.
2. A computer with projector.
3. Computers are equipped with Microsoft Office Word.

Preparations:
1. Check for the availability of websites.
(Menu and nutrition facts for Burger King and McDonald's)
2. If the websites are blocked, screencaps can be provided.

Procedure
:
(Set induction)
1. Teacher shows a slide show of several fast food menus.
2. The teacher will begin asking the students whether those meals sounded healthy, why and why not?

(Development)
Activity One

1. Students will be divided into 3 persons per computer.
2. Teacher will discuss with the students the food pyramid and each of its areas.
3. Teacher will discuss with the class some suggestions of healthy foods they might want to look out for when they go out to eat.
4. Students download the food pyramid available in MS Word form.
5. Students fill up where the food in the menu fits in the food pyramid.

Activity Two

1. Teacher instructs students to study the two food menus again.
2. Students are then instructed to study 2 food items from each menu.
3. Students are then instructed to write a short paragraph on which menu features healthier food choices using words to compare and contrast.
4. Teacher gives an example.
The Burger King Single Mushroom Swiss is healthier than the McDonald's Big Mac because it has only 347 of food calories while the Big Mac has 538.
(Conclusion)
Teacher wraps up the lesson by reminding students the importance of proper nutrition. Teacher provides other websites for additional information.

(Follow-up Activity)
Teacher asks students to think of what they had for breakfast/lunch/dinner yesterday and think how those foods fit in the pyramid. Findings are to be presented as a group in the next class.
